Vehicles with a model year of 1999 or older under personal ownership are eligible for Historic tags. However, not all vehicles prior to model year 1999 are automatically considered Historic. If the owner decides to register the vehicle as Historic, they need to request this by submitting form VR-096.

If the vehicle is 50 years old or older, you may request the “50 Years Historic” tags. Your registration fee may also be lower than standard Historic registration.

Vehicles older than 60 years are eligible for a one-time registration fee and receive non-expiring registration. However, your plates will still read “50 Years Historic.”

If you purchased a vehicle and are registering it in your personal name (not a business), you are not required to complete a Maryland safety inspection when registering under Historic status.

Historic vehicles are exempt from emission testing in Maryland.

No. Historic plates and tags are issued for occasional driving, exhibition, and club activities only. They are not intended for use as a daily commuter vehicle.
